NJDA Testifies before Assembly Health Committee on Licensure

This morning, A-2182, the "Dietitian/Nutritionist Licensing Act," was heard before the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee.  NJDA Licensure Committee members, Tricia Davidson and Rosemary O'Dea, testified alongside NJDA lobbyist, AJ Sabath, in support of the legislation.

NJDA stressed the need for licensure in New Jersey to protect New Jersey consumers from under-qualified, under-trained, and incompetent practitioners.  NJDA also addressed the need for more than just title protection under the law.  Instead, a scope of practice is necessary in order to ensure that only those with years of study, internship, and residency in the science of nutrition are permitted to call themselves a dietitian or nutritionist.

The Association of New Jersey Chiropractors supported the bill in committee.  The bill was opposed by members of the Certified Nutrition Specialists (CNS) and the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists, who voiced concern regarding their ability to practice in New Jersey if this legislation becomes law.

The Assembly Health Committee, chaired by Assemblyman Herb Conaway-- who is also the bill's prime sponsor, asked multiple follow up questions regarding this legislation.  Many of these questions included clarification on CNS qualifications for licensure under the current bill.

The bill passed 9-1-1.  Assemblywoman Handlin abstained and Assemblyman Peterson voted against the bill.  The bill now awaits further consideration by the full Assembly.
